To join himinhis apostolate, he gathered a few Brothers and asked them tosharehis way of life, by the ties of obedience and poverty. At the moment of death, he entrusted them to theDivineProvidence in order to carry on his work, particularlythrough"charitable schools". In 1722, the community settledatSaint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, near the community of the DaughtersofWisdom governed by Marie Louise de Jésus. The Brothers livedwiththe Fathers making up the community of the Missionaries of theHolySpirit. Besides teaching in charitable schools, theBrothersdevoted themselves to the works of the missions andrenderingmaterial services. When Gabriel Deshayes became Superior of theMontfortiancommunities, in 1821, he gave a new impetus to theBrothers;stressing particularly the importance of the teachingprofession. As early as 1824, more than 40 novices took their vowsof Chastity,Poverty and Obedience. The rapid growth in the numberof theteaching Brothers led him progressively to give them aseparateorganization and finally to constitute them into anautonomousInstitute known as the Brothers of Christian Instructionof theHoly Spirit, which became independent after his death in1841.From then onwards, the Institute, which was legally recognizedinFrance in 1853 under the name of the Brothers ofChristianInstruction of Saint Gabriel, spread throughout thecountry, assuming the charge of educating the children of theworkingclasses and undertaking also the education of the deaf andtheblind. At the end of the 19th century, the Brothers crossedthefrontiers of France to establish themselves in Canada andinseveral countries of Europe. The Institute became apontificalcongregation in 1910. Today, their missionary activityextends toall the continents in a spirit of fidelity to the Churchand totheir origins.
